Stamp Out Hunger
Food Drive 2010
A
HUGE
SUCCESS!
It was a typical steamy, muggy
reaching into the 90’s tropical July weather day. Of course it was only May 8th,
who knew? Did it deter the Margate postal carriers or our Pantry
volunteers from their mission??? Of course not. It didn’t even slow them down.
The National Post Office Food Drive was underway and going full steam. The
Pantry of Broward had been lucky enough to be assigned the Post Office
in Margate and the residents of Margate, the Postal carriers and our volunteers
came through with flying colors. The carriers picked up the bags of food that
had been left by each mail box and carried them back to the Post Office. Our
team of volunteers waited there, 40 in strength, to receive, sort and box the
food. Dry goods, glass, and canned foods placed in different boxes so that they
would not damage each other. The two rented 24 foot trucks were on their way
from the Pantry to start picking up the food. All day in the heat
& humidity everyone worked for hours. Meanwhile back at The Pantry,
the staff was waiting fork lift at the ready, to unload and weigh the food.
Everyone worked tirelessly, even our CEO, Penny was driving the lift to help us
get finished, and by 8pm our job was DONE.
Was it worth it?
OH MY YES. We brought in
25,587 pounds of food. This is a "true" weight
not counting the weight of the trucks or boxes. Are we so proud of the people of
Margate and so very thankful to the Margate Postal Staff and our Volunteers? You
bet we are and we can’t wait to do it again next year!
